Just what is the Cloud?
Cloud Hosting is a simple name for fancy webhosting. I’d venture that any company using a hosting company or hosting their servers in a datacenter would say they host in the cloud.
Cloud Hosting is actually more than just webhosting. It is virtual sever hosting taken to the extreme.
Cloud Hosting is much more flexible than general hosting it enables
- Expansion of Resources: drive space, CPU and RAM
- Deployment of servers as needed
How does Cloud Hosting accomplish the flexibility
A cloud environment uses multiple servers for processing power connected to SANs for hard drive storage. When you need more resources, more resources are assigned to your servers. As the hosting company uses all of their resources they expand those by adding host servers and more SAN storage.
What is the difference between the Public and Private Clouds?
Private Clouds
Private Clouds are virtual hosting environments setup on hardware which is dedicated to one specific company. With some of the compliance regularions your company may be required to use a public cloud to ensure your data is separated from all other companies data. Security can also be increased since all hardware is specific to one company.
Public Clouds
Public Clouds are virtual hosting environments setup on hardware which is shared between multiple companies. For example if five companies have virtual servers with a hosting company they are utilizing a Public Clouds.
